Documents You Need to Work in France

Key Takeaways

Preparing for a mission in France is exciting, but showing up without the right papers can stop you from working before you even start. French labor inspectors are strict, and missing documents means immediate suspension from the job site.

The good news? If you work with a certified agency like Europp, we handle the complicated administrative paperwork (A1, Contracts, BTP Cards). However, there are specific personal documents you must provide to us. Here is the complete checklist.

1. Proof of Identity (Non-Negotiable)

As an EU citizen, you do not need a visa, but you must prove your citizenship. You must carry one of the following:

  • National ID Card: Must be valid (check the expiry date!).
  • Passport: Often preferred by banks if you need to open a local account.
Check Expiry Dates!

We cannot legally employ you if your ID expires during the contract period. Double-check your documents at least 3 months before applying.

2. The "Carte BTP" (Construction Only)

If you work in construction (masonry, electricity, plumbing, etc.), you are required to have a specific professional ID card called the Carte BTP. This card was created to fight illegal labor.

You do not need to apply for this yourself. Europp handles the application. However, we need a compliant digital photo from you (similar to a passport photo: clear background, no glasses, looking straight ahead).

3. Medical Fitness Certificate

French law strictly requires a medical examination („Visite Médicale d’Embauche”) to prove you are physically fit for the job.

  • In some cases, a valid medical certificate from your home country (translated) is accepted temporarily.
  • Often, we will schedule an appointment for you with a French occupational doctor upon arrival.

4. Who Handles What?

To avoid confusion, here is a simple breakdown of responsibilities:

Gathering these documents is the first step towards a successful career in France. Once you provide the items in the „You Provide” column, we take care of the rest, ensuring you are 100% compliant and ready to earn.
